Michelangelo's Statue of David is one of the most renowned sculptures in Florence and arguably the world. Created by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) in his early twenties, it was commissioned by the Arte della Lana (the Guild of Wool Merchants) for the Florence Cathedral. The statue was carved from a colossal block of marble that two previous artists, Agostino di Duccio and Antonio Rossellino, had abandoned due to imperfections. Despite these challenges, Michelangelo took on the monumental task of creating the masterpiece.
